Dutch-Indonesian DJ and producer Marc Benjamin has teamed up with Regilio to deliver high-tempo new track ‘Thunder,’ released on Steve Angello‘s SIZE Record the last September 8th.
We have asked them some questions to know more about the release and their life as a producer.
Hi guys, I’m pleased to have a chat with you. First up, how did you get in contact?
Marc Benjamin: I know Regilio for quite a while. A few years ago, we got in touch since he has sent me a couple of his tracks and demos. He also asked me to play on his event, ‘We Are’. I guess that’s the point when we keep in contact afterward.
Regilio: Good to hear, and thanks for the interest in these questions. I’ve met Marc thru the WEARE parties that I and my friends are doing in our hometown Eindhoven
How did the ‘Thunder’ project born?
Marc Benjamin: I’ve stumbled upon the demo that Regilio has been working on through his Snapchat story, and I thought it was a good track and would be great if I jump in. I asked him to send the draft then played it on my speakers. At first, I thought that it needed some more work but I felt it immediately, after teaming up with my production partner Thomas we worked a bit more on the drop and added the break. After a few sessions back and forth, we nailed the track and that’s how we made ‘Thunder’.
Regilio: I’ve had the project for a long time, I think I started the idea in 2014/2015 and then Marc jumped on it and we started working on finishing it.
You are quite different as musicians: Marc style is progressive/big room, while Regilio is more on groovy stuff. How did you manage in merging your musical styles?
Marc Benjamin: I think the diversity between our styles can also be a good thing to create something unique that is shown our latest production. You can really hear our signature sounds coming together in a special way.
Regilio: I wouldn’t call my style groovy, I’ve been doing all kinds of styles from the beginning. I love to make all kinds of music!
Looks like artists are extremely proud to sign a record on SIZE. Is it a special label for you too?
Marc Benjamin: Yes it definitely is. I’ve always been looking up to Size Records and have been following them for years, after Steve Angello’s support on my previous song ‘Riser’ I got the chance to get in touch with him and be able to send my music to him directly.
Regilio: Yes, of course, Steve Angello is a legend and I’m very happy to be a part of his SIZE brand.
When did you decide to become producers, and why?
Marc Benjamin: I started as a local DJ in bars and clubs around Netherlands and played professionally all over the country. Back then, I never thought that it wasn’t needed to be a producer. Through one of my old high school friends back then in 2007, I got in touch with my production partner Thomas Helsloot. It was an instant connection cause up until now we understand each other very well from the music direction. Good thing that we also share the same vision musically.
Regilio: Around the age of 15-16 I found out about FL Studio and saw studio footage from Afrojack, Steve Angello and Hip Hop guys like Pharrell, Lex Luger, Kanye West. This inspired me to start working on making my own music.
Can you provide us a pic of your studio? What kind of stuff do you own?
Marc Benjamin: MacBook Pro, X-key keyboard, and my Bose headphones. In my second photo in my studio at home im using an iMac, M-Audio keyboard and 2 vxt 8 speakers.
Regilio: My setup is very basic, in terms of outboard gear I have the Moog Sub Phatty but mainly everything is in the box.
Which artists would you pick for your dream collab?
Marc Benjamin: It would have to be Zedd, I’ve been in touch with him for a while and in my eyes hes a real musician and every song he put out is outstanding and never a wrong decision.
Regilio: Producer wise I think Skrillex would be the craziest producer to be in the studio with. If it would be a dream collab with a singer or rapper I think it would be super sick to
