New Floor Designs

The shows have been elevated to a unique level in the last ten years, creating new norms. Every year, the organizing firm Cosmopop’s production team collaborates with worldwide designers to create new designs that are unsurpassed in terms of technology and concept. They create unique immersive environments in which guests may completely lose themselves by virtuously blending music, light, film, architecture, and art.

Each dance floor now has its own distinct design, sound, and look and feel. Guests are repeatedly immersed in a new world while remaining at the same party because production and design remain at the highest level and are the cornerstones of every Time Warp.

Mannheim, on the other hand, remains the festival’s centerpiece, because of the design opportunities given by the city and, in particular, the Maimarkthalle. Every year, thousands of tourists from 170 nations flock to this medium-sized city, making it the international center of electronic music for a weekend. Maimarkthalle has earned cult status as a result of Time Warp, and Mannheim has been designated as a “UNESCO City of Music.”

History of Time Warp

Time Warp made its début on November 26, 1994, at Ludwigshafen’s Walzmühle, with only 2000 people in attendance. Those who made it into the warehouse vanished into the party fog at first. Robert Armani’s concert was cut short after 30 minutes due to the oppressive smoke, making way for Laurent Garnier. Fortunately, the Frenchman converted this initial Time Warp into a legendary party, to which he remained devoted for the next three decades. “Time Warp is based on making people dance,” he commented on the 20th anniversary of Time Warp.

That is true both then and now. In 1994, techno was no longer considered underground; electronic music was reaching its apex in Germany. As a result, the inaugural Time Warp was not intended to be a rave like the hundreds that took place in the 1990s. Steffen Charles, Time Warp’s founder, wanted the first Time Warp to be a musical return to the underground. “Time Warp – back to the good old days,” Steffen Charles recounts, should represent this. Aside from the musical focus, the initial party’s setting was also important: “Time Warp shouldn’t be a rave in the traditional sense, rather a party like a large-scale club.”

A curated lineup in a carefully planned and equipped environment has been a Time Warp characteristic since its inception, keeping it unique until this day. While the festival has changed artistically and technologically over the past three decades, its core form has remained the same:

Time Warp is a collection of six or seven specially created clubs where you may dance all night. Time Warp stood for magnificent floor designs, audiovisual universes, and the finest that the electronic music world had to offer back then, as it does now.

Robin Ebinger, who joined the Time Warp team in the late 1990s, recalls difficulties: “After techno and house disappeared from the public radar in the early 2000s, the future of the festival was uncertain.” Despite several setbacks, the number of registrants climbed once more. The event has been sold out every year since 2008.
