Moodymann, who is considered to be one of the most free-spirited and pioneering musicians in Detroit, has remixed one of the city’s current champions, DJ Minx, for a commemorative release that brings a friendship that has lasted more than 20 years full circle.

Moodymann spins his remix of “A Walk in the Park”

Moodymann’s remix of DJ Minx’s classic record “A Walk In The Park,” which was released in 2004, was commissioned by Insomniac’s house and techno imprint Factory 93.

With his remix, the song was transformed from one of the best minimal house tunes of all time into a groovy, experimental masterpiece that transcends the laws of genres.

At the turn of 2000, “A Walk In The Park” was one of the very first records to be released on DJ Minx’s groundbreaking record label, Women On Wax. During this time period, Moodymann acted as a guide and advisor to Minx, assisting her in establishing the label she would later run.

As a result of a relaunch that took place in June of this year, the record label is still active, and so is the friendship between Moodymann and Minx. Both of these artists continue to collaborate as two of Detroit’s most influential and consequential musicians.

It is a remarkable accomplishment that very few people are capable of matching, to be able to revisit the music twenty years later while both artists are still at the peak of their game.

Moodymann‘s loose production serves as a witty interpretation of the song’s name in its entirety.

Moodymann takes the original “A Walk in the Park” and transforms it into a lucid dream that plays with auditory hallucinations, soulful chords, and innovative arrangements. The original version of “A Walk in the Park” followed a rigid and tight pace.

Despite the fact that the simple and subdued bassline is still present, this rendition of “A Walk in the Park” is unlike anything you’ve ever heard before.

Moodymann’s remix is the final piece in the official remix package that DJ Minx initially published at the tail end of 2022. The package comprised remixes from Detroit brother-in-arms Seth Troxler as well as Soul Clap, Ardalan, and even a re-edit of the original by DJ Minx herself. Moodymann’s remix was the final piece in the package.

About Moodymann

Learning to DJ in the late ’80s, then maintaining a critical residency at Motor Club, and delivering long-running radio shows in the city for WGPR and CJAM, DJ Minx has been a central player in the history of dance music in Detroit.

Since the year 2000, she has participated in the Movement Festival held in Detroit, and for the past two years, she has been the host of her very own stage. She has also been recognized with the Spirit of Detroit Award in recognition of the significant impact she has had on the cultural environment of the city.

DJ Minx achieved a new level of prominence in the world of dance music in 2023 by garnering an unprecedented number of engagements at prestigious venues across the globe. Among these were performances scheduled for the legendary Panorama bar in Berlin, the H Ibiza club, and the Defected Festival in Croatia.

Moodymann (Kenny Dixon Jr.), who goes by the name Moodymann, is an outspoken voice in the typically non-confrontational realm of electronic dance music. He is dedicated to maintaining a uniquely black imprint on techno and house music.

Although he avoids the press and interviews in general, there is no denying the authenticity of his musical output. He achieved classic status thanks to gems such as “Sunday Morning,” “Shades of Jae,” and his remix of Innerzone Orchestra’s “People Make the World Go Round.” He achieved this status by utilizing classic soul and jazz samples, low-slung bass lines, and an approach to drum programming that is diametrically opposed to the tendency to push the tempo faster and faster.
