Independently of the announcement of the Top 100 DJs 2021 by DJ MAG, Viberate has released a series of data analyses regarding the electronic music field. With surprise, according to real-world data by Viberate, David Guetta is not the most popular DJ in the world.

DJ Mag has just announced the winners of their annual Top 100 DJ poll, with David Guetta claiming the title of world’s best DJ for the second year in a row. Viberate, music research, and analytics platform looked into the online popularity data of Electronic artists independently of the vote to see if and how the results match up.

Viberate and how they came up with this conclusion.

What is the purpose of data? It’s the “objective popular vote” in a sense. Fans all over the world reward their favorite artists on a daily basis by listening to their music, watching their videos, liking their social media posts, and purchasing their music – not to mention voting in online polls.

Viberate’s sophisticated algorithms consider each artist’s social media and music channels, as well as radio airplay over the course of the year. This provides an unbiased and transparent picture of an artist’s true popularity.

What Viberate has found.

The top 5 most popular Electronic artists in the last 12 months are Marshmello, David Guetta, Alan Walker, Calvin Harris, and The Chainsmokers. Martin Garrix, Tisto, Skrillex, DJ Snake, and Alok complete the Top 10 list. The usual “crowd favorites,” such as Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Afrojack, and Armin van Buuren, did not make the Top 10 list, which is surprising.

The most popular genre is dance. Dance (EDM) artists make up 72 percent of the top 100 artists, House artists make up 10%, and other genres are underrepresented.

This is not the first year that Viberate release this kind of data; in 2021, a number of artists made a significant jump into the Top 100 chart. Imanbek (49th), Nightcrawlers and Riton (43rd and 47th, respectively), A7S (35th), and Topic (47th) are among them (32nd).

Collabs are the way to go in today’s world. The aforementioned artists have jumped as many as 800 places up the Electronic Artists chart thanks to the success of tracks like “Friday” (Nightcrawlers & Riton), “Your Love” (A7S & Topic), and “Breaking Me” (A7S & Topic).

Memes are also effective. The Kiffness, a South African musician who delighted audiences during the Covid-19 lockdown with his musical renditions of “vibing cat,” “alugalug cat,” and sea shanty memes, came in 96th place. Last week, the track “Alugalug Cat” was streamed over 60K times on Spotify alone.
