The ecstatic remix of Brooklyn’s electronic duo Beacon‘s 2022 single “Pay My Debts” comes from none other than Kölsch, the godfather of Danish techno. The song was released by Apparent Movement, their own independent imprint.

The two remixes before Kölsch spin

From their fourth studio album, “Along The Lethe,” Kölsch has reworked the song “Pay My Debts,” elevating the atmospheric sound and melancholy vocals of the original track to produce a true club hit. The next tune from Kölsch, which comes as a follow-up to “Until Next Time (Lycoriscorus remix)” and “I’m The Answer (Reznik remix),” perfectly combines rich melodies with high-precision tension/release techno production. The remix was teased all summer long at significant European festivals, most famously Tomorrowland, and it is now available everywhere on Beacon’s own imprint, Apparent Movement.

One of the most sought-after DJs on the planet, Rune Reilly Kölsch collaborates with Beacon once more for another masterclass in electronic production on this cinematic remix, with relentless kicks and rapturous synth stabs that pack a mighty cathartic punch. His influential electronic productions have stood out over the last 20 years with memorable hooks and powerful techno production.

In an effort to explore new avenues for visual production, Beacon created a visualizer to go along with Kolsch’s remix. Undulating landscapes and abstract forms pulse to the ominous beat of Kolsch’s production, showcasing their constantly growing exploration of modern technology. The visualizer, created in Runwayml using Mullarney’s words as inspiration, travels through improbable landscapes and ominous atmospheres to conjure uncharted locales where “something in the sky turns black.”

The story behind the remix

The two were studying art and painting at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn when they first met. Since then, they have collaborated under the moniker Beacon, releasing music on electronic labels like Ghostly, Kompakt, and Anjunadeep. Early in 2020, Mullarney III and Gossett started working on their fourth record after returning home to face the pandemic’s realities. A new commission for the clothing company Balenciaga was also completed in that year, and Apple utilized the then-unreleased original song “Show Me How” to introduce the new MacBook Pro. They will release their most diverse and broad album to date, “Along the Lethe,” in 2022. It features collaborations with Colin Stetson and Matthew Dear and was conceived and produced primarily in isolation. The two extraordinary creatives are giving the album new life as they ask other electronic musicians to reimagine their songs as they enter a new stage of life and with more assurance.
