A couple of weeks ago we had a nice talk with the guys from KEV.
For the people that don’t recognize them, they are a group of four Swedish guys that sing and produce music. They have collaborated with Klahr on his ‘Dreaming Wild‘ EP.
We don’t want to spoil other things so, below, you can find the integral interview and, in the end, a couple of KEV‘s tracks.
Hi KEV, thanks for accepting to be interviewed 😊 Let’s start with some basic questions. Tell us about KEV, it’s members and where you guys are from?
Hi, guys! We’re glad you approached us. In KEV we’re four guys. Three producers and one singer. KEV started late 2015 with the ambitions to make music that touches people, but also to make music that we have the vibe for, without boundaries. We felt that music needs to be fun and it needs to be creative, and with this project, we feel that we can be how creative as we want. We’re all from Sweden and from the same city, a small town on the Swedish west coast, called Halmstad. It’s also here we have our studio.
There are a lot of big artists that are born in Sweden. According to you, what led you to approach the world of music? And why, what did you aim to create and capture through your music?
The music industry is very tough, and it’s a lot of great artists out there. But I felt that what we do, and our visions and thoughts were something that I couldn’t see out there. That was very inspiring and something that made me, and us, feel that KEV as a project could succeed. We want to create music that touches people in an emotional way, but at the same time have a common thread together with pictures and visuals. A song is not only a song; a song is a feeling, a visual, a story. And we think about all that while making our music.
Who and what inspires KEV?
Considering we’re crossing the genres and don’t have any boundaries in the making of our music, we have quite a lot that inspires us. For instance, I think that the weather in Sweden inspires me and the big landscapes, it’s beautiful. Stories from people, your stories and life, and things that you’ve been trough are, of course, a big part of the inspiration. Great movies and also great music that breaks the rules and makes something entirely new. For instance, The Weeknd, Daft Punk, M83 and Bon Iver are big inspirations when it comes to music, they’re great.
You have recently released your Chapter X EP deluxe edition, which includes orginal tracks and a couple of tracks have been remixed. I assume that besides singing, you guys also produce/ play instruments in the studio? Tell us a bit about how the EP was born.
Yes, it’s correct. The EP was the first thing that we ever released with KEV, and it was born from just a couple of songs. In the beginning, we just made a lot of songs and were playing around with it trying to figure out which way to go. And when we had a couple of songs we decided to release the EP, as an introduction of KEV and our sound. When we make music, overall and since the beginning actually, we’ve taken care of the first ideas and let the creativity flow and to try all the ideas that are coming. We have our roles and considering we’re coming from different backgrounds musically, it always gets interesting.
One of the track is remixed by Sick individuals, ‘Moments’. How was this collaboration born?
Yeah, when we decided to have the deluxe version we wanted to have different styles on the remixes. And Sick Individuals made a cool remix, so we took it with us to the Deluxe version. They’re great, they just did their version of the song, and we liked it.
Moving on the Klahr’s EP, Dreaming Wild, the opening track is in collaboration with you also. How did you and Klahr join forces in working together?
We first spoke with Klahr on Facebook. We showed him some of our music and then decided to try to work together. Klahr comes from Kungsbacka which is just 1 hour from Halmstad, so we felt that we wanted to have a session at least together. And it worked well. We had some songs that he wanted to put his touch on and that was the beginning of our collaboration.
We have different music styles, but at the same time very similar, and ‘Dreaming Wild’ is just one of many tracks that we’ve made together. ‘Dreaming Wild’ is also a track where you can see what happens when you have the big pop sounds combined with electronic dance music.
Do you enjoy working with other generes, like electronic dance music, that move away from pop music, or even indie music? Tell us why/ or why not.
Absolutely. It’s cool in many ways. First off, you can always learn from different genres and people working with other types of music, and in the end its all about the art and the music. So genres can’t be something negative, at least if you have an open mind.
Though you work across different genres, all your music is connected by a common thread. What is your favorite genre or the one where you like to work most?
Good question, not sure what to call it. I mean, we’re making pop music. That’s our genre, but pop music is a colossal genre today, and you can make a lot of different styles of it. So pop-music is our thing, maybe KEV-pop?
Tell us what you are currently working on in the studio at the moment? More KEV tracks, or something else?
Right now we’re working with a lot of new music. Just trying to get as much of material as possible and to be able to improve as musicians. We have a lot of tracks, so hopefully, we could release an album shortly.
Finally, what are your plans for the Summer? Can we expect to catch you live on tour?
I hope so. We don’t have anything we can talk about right now, but we hold our thumbs up and will let you know when we’re going on tour 😊
